Hospitality Industry Law
A basic study of hotel, motel, and restaurant law emphasizing risk management, security, food and liquor service liability, employment law, civil rights and discrimination law, federal and state, and how they apply to public accommodations and employment. The student is introduced to the fundamental laws, rules and regulations applicable to the hospitality industry. A case study approach is used in conjunction with lectures that encourage student participation in class debate in order to develop an awareness and understanding of the legal challenges and problems confronting the managers and executives in policy and decision making and develop and implement reasonable procedures to deal with them.

Biography

John Thomas is an Adjunct Professor in the Florida International University School of Hospitality and Tourism Management, teaching courses in hospitality and tourism law. Mr. Thomas is a practicing lawyer who has had a maritime law office in Miami, Florida, for more than twenty eight years. During that time he has provided counsel and has litigated numerous issues that are common for hospitality and tourism, both on land and at sea.

Mr. Thomas is an advocate of alternative dispute resolution, such as by negotiation, mediation or arbitration. He was a founder, and first president, of the Miami Maritime Arbitration Council. He is especially knowledgeable in dealing with international issues, having extensive experience in international travel, shipment of cargo and regulations for ships and yachts.

In addition to his active legal practice, Mr. Thomas has authored materials and presented lectures on a wide range of topics, to both lawyers and non-lawyers. He is now using his teaching skills and experience to educate FIU hospitality and tourism students.
