Human Relations in the Hospitality Industry

Examines the problems faced by the supervisor and the executive in managing the human element in the hospitality field. Designed to give the student insight into the varied social and psychological factors present in any employee-employer relationship.

A survey of the concepts of organizational behavior and industrial psychology theory, from both the research and practical points of view. The course is designed to assist students in making sound decisions in the hospitality area by making them sensitive to the organizational parameters that influence their decisions.

Training for Teambuilding

Managers in the hospitality industry are challenged to create environments that encourage diverse employees to function effectively as a group to achieve organizational goals. This course will teach group leaders specific skills and activities that build confidence, cooperation, teamwork, creativity, trust, decision-making, conflict resolution, communication, effective feedback and problem solving skills. These activities range from 10-minute icebreakers to 2-hour problem-solving initiatives. The students will learn how to de-brief all activities so the learning can be translated to relevant managerial objectives.

Managing Self and Others

This pass/fail course is offered to develop skills for students that are necessary for personal and professional success in life. In addition to identifying personal strengths and weaknesses, this course aims to help students understand other and learn how to effectively communicate with them.  The participants will identify self-defeating attitudes and will discuss alternative philosophies such as forgiveness, self-acceptance, congruence in attitudes and behavior, and mindfulness.  Students will incorporate these attitudes in managing themselves and others.

Biography

Diann Newman has been an educator/administrator at Florida International University since 1975.  She has had administrative responsibilities ranging from the Director of Admissions to Associate Dean of Undergraduate Studies to her current role as Academic advisor for Hospitality Management.  Professor Newman also teaches graduate courses for teachers through the Teacher Education Institute.

Dr. Newman is a professional speaker and workshop facilitator.  She conducts seminars on topics such as self-esteem, and communication skills.  She consults on a monthly basis with Miami Women's HealthCenter; Palmetto Hospital; West Boca Medical Center; Pankey Institute and Metro Traffic School.  She writes a monthly column for Miami Women's HealthCenter and Palmetto Hospital's Just for Women newsletter.

Dr. Newman is licensed in Florida as a Mental Health Counselor.  She has co-authored the book, Human Resource management: A Customer-Oriented Approach (Prentice-Hall, 1998).

She has received recognition in the University for her excellence in advising and the University T.I.P. award.
