Courses Offered and Course Description

HFT 3403
Accounting for the Hospitality Industry

Introduction to the principles of accounting as they apply in the hospitality Industry. Prepares the student for work in advanced accounting and Financial management. Required for students who have not satisfactorily completed introductory accounting courses.

HFT 4464
Financial Analysis in the Hospitality Industry
Facilitates understanding and use of financial analysis in the hospitality industry. Topics include decision-making based on ratio analysis, leverage, financing sources and other financial issues. Prerequisite: HFT 3403.

HFT 6477
Financial Management for the Hospitality Industry

A study of the principles of financial management and their application to the hospitality industry. Attention is focused on capital investment analysis, financing, mergers and other current financial issues in the hospitality industry. Prerequisites: HFT 4464 and HFT 4474

ACG 2021
Accounting for Business Decisions
A study of accounting concepts and analyses essential to determining the income and financial position of a business enterprise, This course is an introduction to the accounting concepts, principles, and techniques used in recording transactions and preparing financial statements for business enterprises. It is a comprehensive first course in accounting for students with no previous exposure to accounting or business and is designed for both majors and non-majors in accounting.

Biography

Elisa Moncarz is Professor of Accounting and Finance in the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management at FIU, where she has been a member of the faculty since 1974. A Certified Public Accountant in New York and Florida, she has extensive auditing, tax and Securities Exchange (SEC) experience with several national and international firms including Ernst & Young, where she assumed full responsibility for the approval of SEC and audit engagements and the evaluation of internal control systems of several hospitality firms.

Professor Moncarz has co-authored six books and book chapters in Accounting and Financial Management including a book chapter in Accounting and Finance for the International Hospitality Industry and a textbook on Accounting for the Hospitality industry published by Prentice Hall in 2003.

Professor Moncarz has served as a speaker, consultant and presenter for many national and international organizations and has published more than 30 articles in leading academic journals, including the FIU Hospitality Review, the International Journal of Hospitality Management and the Cornell Hotel and Restaurant Quarterly. She has received #12-16 rankings among the most prolific contributors to hospitality academic journals based on studies published in the Hospitality Research Journal and the Journal of Hospitality and Tourism Education.

In her extensive academic career at Florida International University, Professor Moncarz has been a member of several Search and Screen Committees for Deans, Provosts and Vice-President of Development. She has also been a member of the Research Council, Faculty Senate, Awards committee, Affirmative Action Committee and Title IX compliance. She has also served as the leader of the Finance and Technology team and as a member of the graduate curriculum committee of the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management.

Professor Moncarz is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the Florida Institute of CPAs, the New York State Society of CPAs, the Association of Hospitality Financial Management Education, the National Association of Hispanic Professors of Business and Economics, the International Society for Communication of New Ideas (ISINI) and the Cuban American CPA Association.

Professor Moncarz has appeared in Who's Who in the South and Southwest, Who's Who and Why of Successful Florida Women, Who's Who in Education and Who's Who in Finance and Industry and has been a recipient of a Research award, a Presidential Award and awards for excellence in teaching and research.
